Join us at the Kogi UK get together

I hereby wish to bring to your attention that Igala UK, and the other 2 senatorial unions have decided to have a joint celebration to mark the beginning of the year 2012. This celebration is meant to be celebrated as we always do sometimes next month but all efforts to secure a venue proved abortive. I therefore urge you turn out enmasse to celebrate the event. The Secretary of Kogi State had recently put out the information.

The get together will be taking place on the 14th of January, 2012,

Venue: St. Lukes Church, Kilbun.

Time: 2pm (prompt)

Christmas/New year is a family event, endeavour to invite somebody/families and have a good time together.

A key step to achieving this objective is the convoking of a regular economic summit to develop and implement an IGALA DEVELOPMENT AGENDA (IDA) that will set in motion, the machinery for the translation of the peoples’ hopes and aspirations into an emergent reality.”

We are pleased to announce that the preparation to host our annual Igala Day is well underway. The organising committee has confirmed that this years event is set for Saturday 03 September 2011, and will be held at the Quality Hotel, the same venue we held our 10th anniversary celebrations two years ago. Full address details and public transport route will be made available nearer the time.

The Chairman has sent invitations to Kogi State and Local Government Officials and also posted special invitations to some of our cultural and traditional rulers. We are hoping for a full house at this event.

This years dress code for women is our traditional “Achi” which is now available for purchase from Mrs Agbo. Please place your order now to avoid any last minute problems. Each pair costs £50 and money raised from this will go towards the various Igala UK initiatives back home. Please contact Mrs Agbo on 07466662310 . We will make some quantities available in South East area for easy collection for our ladies leaving in Southeast area.

The first edition of Igala UK almanac 2012 or Calendar will be launched in our coming Igala Day. Do you want to appear gorgeous in the Calendar? This is another good way to raise awareness of who we are and at the same time help raise funds for the things we hope to achieve in Igala Land.

Ukomu Igala hosts dialogue with political candidates

Ukomu Igala, the emerging Pan Igala Umbrella Organization is hosting a dialogue session with candidates from Kogi East Senatorial District vying for offices at the forthcoming general elections at local, state, and national levels from all political parties.

Date: Saturday March 26, 2011

Venue: F. S. Idachaba Lecture Theater, Kogi State University, Anyigba

Time: 10.00 AM Prompt

Keynote Speaker: Professor Francis Idachaba, an accomplished Igala son and a distinguished Agricultural Economist, outstanding education administrator, and a renowned international development specialist.

The dialogue session will afford the candidates an opportunity to present directly to the electorate, their visions for the development of Igala Land when they get into office. It will also afford them the opportunity to listen to the priorities that a broad section of Igala Communities at home and in Diaspora would want their elected representatives to pursue. These priorities were collated through an open and transparent process in the view of Igala sons and daughters all over the world.

Ukomu Igala is committed to providing a credible voice to the collective aspirations of the Igala people, and work towards the advancement and development of Igala land. The organisation is a partnership between Igala communities in the US/Canada, UK/Europe, and other non-political Igala organizations in Nigeria and abroad. The Interim leader of the organization is Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim SAN, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees is Professor Francis S. Idachaba.

People expected also include party leaders, traditional rulers, leaders of non-political organizations, and opinion leaders.

Dr. Spencer Onuh gets NSRDA appointment

Our former Chairman Dr Spencer Onuh has been appointed as the Director, Centre for Satellite Technology and Development at the National Space Research and Development Agency, Abuja, Nigeria. This is great news and we would like to congratulate him for this wonderful achievement and wish him all the best on his new venture. Please try and call him to extend your best wishes.

Summary of our latest meeting

Igala UK had the second congress meeting of the year at the All Saints Community Centre. Big on the agenda was Igala day 2010 which has been fixed for 26th August here in London. The executive also introduced plans for a Health programme to be launched later this year. It was also Igala Uk’s turn to host the Kogi Union and their own meeting followed immediately successfully. The full details of the meeting are available to members who are registered on the Igala UK mailing list.

Media watch: SSA Pledges Succour for Rural Women

The newly appointed Senior Special Assistant to Kogi State Governor on Rural Women Development, Mrs. Zanaib Mohammed, has said that her priority would be to empower rural women and reduce poverty to the barest minimum in the state.
Entrepreneurship development of women, she revealed, would be placed on the front burner in the collective efforts to free rural women from the shackles of poverty.
According to her, empowering women to go into business for sustainable development would be the panacea, against high scale poverty that is currently ravaging the land.
The Senior Special Assistant who has spent barely a year in the country, having lived in Britain for 24 years, said”there is no basis for comparison between African women and Western women as they are poles apart”.
According to her, some of the things one sees as a rich man’s wealth in Africa are necessities of life in the advanced world.
She, however, commended Governor Ibrahim Idris, for creating women development projects, saying the “government is on the right path, first by identifying the gap and creating the enablement to enhance the living standard of the rural women”.
